The Putnam County High School FFA Dairy Show Team went to the Madison County Alumni Winter Jamboree the weekend of Jan. 14. There were 12 weight classes, and the top two in each competed for Grand Champion.
Dalaney Raff placed first in weight class, second in Showmanship and exhibited the fifth overall heifer.
Syerra Burky showed two heifers and placed first and second in Weight Class, making her the only competitor at the Jamboree with two in the finals. She was also sixth in Showmanship.
Samantha Stephens placed fifth in Showmanship and third in Weight Class. Seth Harris Jr. placed second in Showmanship and in Weight Class. Cecila Romero placed second in Showmanship and third in Weight Class. Sydney Harris placed first in Weight Class and third in Showmanship.
“Students are allowed to exhibit up to three heifers in the State Show in February,” said PCHS advisor Kelly Smith. “So most of them will show two or three during the show season. Syerra is an experienced showman and chose to show two this season. Dalaney is also showing two this season, one dairy heifer and one beef heifer.
“The Madison County Winter Jamboree does what they call a final grand drive. So each heifer that won their weight class comes back into the show ring and the judge selects the top five overall from the entire show. The judge makes his selection based on general appearance, dairy characteristics, rear feet and legs and size of each heifer.”
