A Greensboro man was killed in a vehicle crash, and in a separate incident, a child was badly burned in a house fire; both tragedies happened in Eatonton Thursday evening, June 13.
According to Putnam County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Russell Blenk, a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle was being driven by Charles Bailey eastbound on the Sparta Highway/GA16 around 4:15 p.m., with Bailey's wife, Rita, as passenger.
At the same time, a 2003 Chevy Tahoe, being driven by Cade Wooten, of Milledgeville, was heading west, and was attempting to turn from Hwy. 16 onto Pea Ridge Road. Bailey's motorcycle hit the front right side of the Tahoe as it was turning. Bailey, age 68, of Greensboro, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rita was flown by medical helicopter to Navicent Health Medical Center hospital in Macon, in serious condition, Blenk said.
The wreck is being investigated by Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Also Thursday evening, Eatonton Firefighters battled the fire of a burning trailer in the trailer park at the end of Imperial Mill Road where it intersects with U.S. 441/Eatonton Bypass. According to Eatonton Fire Chief Eugene Hubert, a 10-year-old child was badly burned in the fire and a medical helicopter was called in.
The 10-year-old was reportedly playing with fireworks on his bed when the fire started. He was flown to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta.
More details will be provided as they become known.
