Lake Oconee is filled with many people who specialize in different areas. Whether it be food, clothes or other businesses, this part of Georgia has a lot to offer.
A unique specialty this area has to offer is interior design.
One of the interior designers in the area is Kayla Yearwood Mason of Kayla Yearwood Interiors.
As a Greene County native, Mason found herself intrigued by interior design early in life. Her dream began from her desire to be different from everyone else.
“When I was younger, I painted my room purple,” Mason said. “Because everyone else had their room painted pink.”
Mason still finds it funny that her passion was born in such a unique way.
Though she was interested in this field, Mason didn’t realize interior design was what she was looking for until she was 18 years old.
She had just graduated from high school and was struggling to find her purpose in her career. Like many high school graduates, Mason had applied to colleges but still had no idea what she wanted to pursue.
Until one day it all clicked for her.
“I’ve always had a passion for colors, bold patterns and such,” Mason said. “And I was really into architecture. And while I was applying to Athens Tech, I saw where they have an interior design program. So, it fit into all the boxes that interest me.”
From that moment, Mason went on to attend Athens Technical College and earn an Associates of Applied Science degree in interior design.
Now as the owner of her business, Mason provides a little bit of everything. She mainly does project management, including giving clients design advice for their specific projects.
She plans to narrow her focus to kitchen and bathroom remodeling because her passion now is working with hard surfaces.
But working with hard surfaces isn’t what keeps her motivated in this field. The ability to be creative with everything she does makes her job fun everyday.
Most times, Mason finds herself talking to clients about remodeling a place in their residence that doesn’t feel like home. Mason enjoys working with her clients to give every place in their home a cozy feeling.
“I enjoy taking a space that someone’s not happy with and completely transforming it into something they love,” Mason said.
Mason now lives in Milledgeville with her husband of six months, Cody Mason. She hasn’t forgotten about her home area, though.
With approximately 95 percent of her business coming from the Lake Oconee area, Mason loves working here. But for her, though, it is the people in Lake Oconee that makes this a special place to work.
“My first job was [in Lake Oconee],” Mason said. “I got to know a lot of new people and made so many friends. Everyone here is just so inviting and I love it.”
