Eatonton City Hall will open for business on May 26 council members decided last Tuesday. That is after a physical hiatus since March in accordance with state guidelines to shelter in place against the spread of COVID-19. With Councilmember Alvin Butts absent, city leaders unanimously agreed to re-open in a regularly scheduled meeting conducted by conference call and online via GoToMeeting. “The water authority is back on and the county government is back open already, so we are the only ones who are still closed,” said Mayor John Reid before seeking the thoughts of council members. “I don’t see any reason why we can’t open up after Memorial Day,” said Councilmember Teresa Doster. Councilmember Janie Reid agreed, noting administrators would be expected to comply with safety guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The resolution states disconnect orders and reconnect fees will resume in June for all natural gas customers and the response of city volunteer firefighters will be limited to accidents and fire calls only through at least June 12.
