Did you catch the pun in my column title?

Old buddy, old pal?Huh? Did ya, did ya, did ya? (That’s a reference to The Lion King, for those unaware.)

This week was/is really strange. Basketball region tournaments kicked into high gear right away Monday with a couple of our teams participating. You can read about the results of those games inside this week’s sports section.

By the time I waded through the basketball waters this week, I could not come up with a concrete idea for my column. Well, I thought about writing about our playoff-bound teams, but the last thing I want to do this late in the season is jinx anybody, and Lord knows I’m good at it.

So, I’ll let that plan simmer for a while. This week, I want to be a little creative and off-the-wall.

As I wrote my stories this week, I listened to some music. I checked out some old songs from my favorite Disney movies: “Circle of Life,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “A Whole New World,” “You’ll be in my Heart,” etc., etc.

Along the way, I came across a song that somehow slipped my mind as I searched for Disney music. It’s “I’ll Make a Man Out of You,” performed by Donny Osmond in the 1998 film Mulan.

I think “Hakuna Matata” is the best Disney montage scene ever. But, I gotta say, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” is a close second. It is fun, energetic, and briskly advances the story. That’s children’s (er, uh, 26-year-old) storytelling 101.

If I’m not mistaken, Mulan was the very first film I saw in a movie theater, so I’ve got lots of nostalgic memories surrounding this film. My love for “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” goes all the way back to then.

Basketball season is done for all but four of our local teams as of this writing. I expect we will have three teams reach the state playoffs with a potential fourth if there are some upsets – which are certainly possible this time of year.

I should probably hold off on this column until the official end of basketball season when every team is finished up, either by playoff elimination or, hopefully, a state title. But the creative juices started flowing and I just couldn’t help myself.

I present to you a parody song about the end of basketball season, which is set to the tune of “I’ll Make a Man Out of You.” Take a listen to that song (scroll down), get the melody in your head, then read through these basketball-themed lyrics. The layout of my song is a little different so I could fit all of our teams, but it follows the same basic pattern.

Maybe you will find them amusing. Maybe you won’t. I amused myself, so I’m good either way.

“I Can’t Believe Basketball Season is Gone”

Let’s get down to business, and write this column

Don’t have any good ideas, but my mood’s not solemn

‘Cause I’ve got this Mulan song stuck in my head

So I’ll just write a parody song

I can’t believe basketball season is gone…

Morgan had a tough year, at least for the boys

But I liked how they fought, and maintained their poise

The Morgan girls will keep playing after this week

As the state tournament dawns

I can’t believe basketball season is gone…

Over at NGA, located in Siloam

The boys team made its opponents, look as big as gnomes

Even though the girls won just one game

The way they fought, man, it showed real brawn

I can’t believe basketball season is gone…

(It flew byyy)

It really feels like it just got started

(It flew byyy)

Our teams all have a lot to build on

(It flew byyy)

I just wish they could keep on playing

Even if those long nights sometimes made me yawn…

In Greensboro the Tigers, roared on a few nights

What an awesome story, about D.J. Wright

The girls got better down the stretch

How I wish we could see them play on

I can’t believe basketball season is gone…

At LOA the boys team, showed a lot of grit

Though they often struggled, you never saw them quit

And the Lady Titans are playoff bound

For the second year, their wins list is long

I can’t believe basketball season is gone…

(It flew byyy)

It really feels like it just got started

(It flew byyy)

Our teams all have a lot to build on

(It flew byyy)

I just wish they could keep on playing

Even if those long nights sometimes made me yawn…
