Had two children in back seat
Two Sparta residents were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of handgun during the commission of a crime last week after a traffic stop on I-20.
According to reports, Sgt. Patrick Paquette conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling eastbound at milepost 136. When he made contact with passenger Shakerria Qushae Hunt, 23, and driver Keandre Marquis Burton, 25, he said he smelled and saw marijuana in the car.
The driver and passenger were asked to exit the car and a probable cause search was done. Paquette found a jar containing three plastic bags of marijuana inside another bag lying on the passenger floorboard. Inside Hunter’s pocket book, he found a vacuum-sealed bag containing five more bags of marijuana. He also found a Tauras brand 9mm handgun in the glove box.
Burton was arrested at the scene, but Hunt was released to care for the 3-year-old and 5-month old children in the back seat. The 5-month-old was not properly restrained, according to the report. Hunt was instructed to turn herself in the next day.
