Playoff matchups for Lake Country's football teams are now available

Playoff matchups for the football teams in Greene, Morgan and Putnam counties are locked in.

Morgan County knew its opponent late Friday night. The Bulldogs will travel to Lovett this week in the first round of the Class AAA state playoffs.

Entering play last week, it was expected that Morgan’s first-round opponent would be Westminster. However, because Westminster lost to Lovett, 34-28, there was a three-way tie for second in Region 5-AAA. Westminster, Lovett and Pace Academy each had a 4-2 region record. Therefore, coin flips decided their playoff seeding.

Morgan clinched a playoff spot the week before with a blowout win over East Jackson. Last week’s contest between Morgan and Hart decided the third and fourth seed from Region 8-AAA.

Meanwhile, Gatewood won its region championship last week with a 41-8 win at Piedmont Academy.

The Gators’ victory also secured a first-round bye in the upcoming GISA Class AA state playoffs. Gatewood is off this coming Friday.

Next week, the Gators will host the winner of Southwest Georgia Academy and Briarwood. That game will begin Gatewood’s eighth consecutive trip to the postseason. The Gators have not missed the playoffs since the 2010 season.

If the Gators pick up another win next Friday, they will host the following week's game as well.

With its 35-10 victory over Tattnall Square Academy this past Friday, Greene County won its first region title since 2005.

The Tigers also secured a first-round bye with the win. They will be off this Friday but return to action next week.

The GHSA Class A power rating and playoff bracket were not finalized until Monday afternoon. Upon their release, the Tigers learned they will host the winner of Macon County-Chattahoochee County.

There is a chance Greene will host another round of the playoffs if it wins next Friday, but that will not happen unless Pelham loses next week. Pelham received the No. 4 spot in the power rating whereas Greene was fifth.
