Cause of death under investigation
The death of a woman whose body was found floating in Lake Oconee is being investigated by Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Howard Sills said the body of Judith McClure White, 71, of West River Bend Drive, was pulled from the water with assistance from Putnam County Fire Department after a neighbor called 911 Saturday and reported what they thought was a body in the lake.
“Ms. White had a myriad of health issues and was on all types of medication,” Sills said. “Her crutch was laying by the seawall, and we have no way of knowing if she accidentally fell in or what happened.”
Sills said her body was floating approximately 20 feet from the shore in front of her next door neighbor’s house. He said the call came in to 911 at 12:10 p.m., but when they got there, it was obvious to rescuers that the body had been in the water several hours.
“The neighbor didn’t know who it was,” he said. “They actually had texted Ms. White and said ‘it looks like a body is floating in the lake. Waiting for sheriff to get here.’ We found her phone and saw the text.”
Sills said there didn’t appear to be any foul play and the body had been sent to the GBI medical examiner for an autopsy.
